THE PROCESS OF CREATING
A BAO LAM LACQUER PRODUCT
To create a lacquer product with distinctive depth, durability and beauty, the artisan must go through an elaborate handcrafted process that requires patience, skill and a deep love for the craft.
Bao Lam Lacquer’s process consists of three fundamental stages: preparing the base, decorating and finishing.
1. Preparing the base – laying the foundation for the artwork
The base is the foundation that determines the durability and quality of a lacquer product. To achieve a smooth, strong and refined surface, the product goes through numerous stages and 15 layers of lacquer, each carefully applied by skilled artisans.
Every layer is meticulously applied, treated and polished, creating a smooth and even surface ready for the decoration stage.
2. Decoration – bringing the product to life
Once the base is completed, the artisan begins applying artistic ideas and imagery to the product. This stage creates the distinctive appearance and individual character of each work.
Decorative techniques may include hand-painted motifs, eggshell inlay, seashell inlay, gold leaf, silver leaf and the combination of various colors according to the artistic concept.
The decoration stage itself involves approximately 5 layers of lacquer, allowing the materials and decorative elements to bond together and creating the characteristic depth of lacquer art.
3. Finishing – preserving beauty through time
After decoration is completed, the product enters the finishing stage.
The surface is coated with 3 protective layers of lacquer to preserve and protect the colors, followed by 2 polishing treatments or a matte surface treatment, depending on the desired aesthetic.
Thus, completing a Bao Lam lacquer product may involve a total of 25 layers of lacquer.
